Wakefield is an historic cathedral city on the River Calder and eastern edge of the Pennines. A battle site during the Wars of the Roses, Wakefield later became an important market town and centre for wool, exploiting its position on the River Calder to become an inland port. The most prominent landmark is Wakefield Cathedral, which at 247 feet, has the tallest spire in Yorkshire. Others include the Grade II Neoclassical Crown Court of 1810, as well as Wakefield Town Hall and the County Hall of 1898, both of which are Grade I listed. The medieval Wakefield Bridge with its Chantry Chapel, Sandal Castle and Lawe Hill in Clarence Park are ancient monuments. The city centre is the perfect place to shop, with two large shopping centres; Trinity Walk and The Ridings. There are also plenty of great places to eat and drink. Attractions include The Hepworth Wakefield featuring works of Wakefield-born sculptor Barbara Hepworth, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park set within 500-acres of 18th century parkland and the National Coal Mining Museum. There are also a number of excellent country parks and golf courses.
