Ilkley is a spa town in Wharfedale, one of the Yorkshire Dales. The town centre is characterised by Victorian architecture and parades with independent and speciality shops. Bettys, the famous Yorkshire tea room, has a shop in the town and there are plenty of ‘real ale’ pubs. Head down to the River Wharfe to the Manor House Museum which is the town’s most historic building, dating back to the 14th century and built on the site of a Roman fort, Olicana. Riverside Gardens is a lovely park in which to spend an afternoon. Ilkley Pool and Lido is a popular place for a swim and has stunning countryside views. Ilkley is also home to the local Ilkley Brewery and Wharfedale Brewery. Popular events include Ilkley Literature Festival, Summer Festival and Real Food Ilkley Markets. Ilkley Moor, providing a backdrop to the south of the town, is the subject of the folk song ‘On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at’, often described as the unofficial anthem of Yorkshire. The surrounding countryside is a paradise for lovers of the Great Outdoors, with the famous Cow and Calf Rocks above the town and the Old Bridge providing the official start to The Dales Way, an 84-mile walk to Bowness-on-Windermere in the Lake District.
