Bradford is a city in West Yorkshire with a rich industrial heritage and diverse cultural background, situated in the eastern foothills of the Pennines, close to the Yorkshire Dales. The city is famous as the birthplace of the composer Delius, the Brontë sisters, author J.B. Priestley and artist David Hockney. Bradford was formerly a major producer of textiles and was once known as the woollen centre of the world. It remains one of the north of England’s important cities, with modern industries such as engineering, IT and financial services. Bradford boasts fine Victorian buildings, including City Hall, the Wool Exchange, Manningham Mills and the nearby industrial village of Saltaire is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bradford is known for its great shops at The Broadway, The Kirkgate and Sunbridge Wells, and places to eat, including nationally-renowned curry houses. There is also a vibrant nightlife. Bradford is the location of the National Science and Media Museum, The Peace Museum, Industrial Museum and the Alhambra Theatre which dates from 1913.
