Staithes was once one of the largest fishing ports on the north east coast of the UK and an important source of minerals. This village's wonderful charm, with its cottages and towering cliffs has long been a powerful draw for those interested in fine art, geology (‘The Dinosaur Coast’), bird watching and getting back to nature. The soaring, rugged cliffs make Staithes a great place for walking and exploring. Part of the Cleveland Way runs between Staithes and Skinningrove. The ‘old village', located in a small, sheltered cove at the base of the cliff, is peppered with small B&Bs and local fishermen's cottages. Visit the lifeboat station and the Staithes Gallery which is housed in an elegant Georgian building. Staithes Festival takes place in September.
