A lovely market town in East Yorkshire, Howden boasts cobbled streets lined with Georgian buildings, shops, historic coaching inns, charming tea rooms, and a small market which takes place each Friday. At the heart of the town is Howden Shire Hall a centre for the arts, live music, theatre and comedy events, as well as a cinema. The town has a beautiful medieval church known as Howden Minster; once one of the largest and most prestigious churches in the north of England. In 1265, a school was founded within the Minster. The entrance to the Tudor school building beside the Minster is marked with a blue plaque. The powerful Bishops of Durham often stayed at Howden, and to provide a suitable residence they erected a manor, sometimes called Howden Bishops Palace. Most of the once extensive manor is gone now, but the banqueting hall remains, with a large Norman gateway. Close to the town centre is the historic Ashes Playing Fields with gardens, a play park and recreational areas. On the outskirts of town, Howden Marsh is a lovely place for a walk, with a lake and small islands which have become a habitat for birds and wildlife. Just outside Howden, at Breighton Aerodrome is the Real Aeroplane Museum.
