Flamborough is a village in East Yorkshire set in a dramatic and rugged location. It is approximately 4 miles north-east of Bridlington on the prominent coastal feature of Flamborough Head. The village is a popular tourist destination, particularly during the summer months. The impressive Church of St Oswald stands in Flamborough and was designated a Grade II listed building in 1966 and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England. In the village is also the remains of Flamborough Castle, a medieval fortified manor house. The centre contains a number of shops and pubs. There are not one, but two lighthouses at Flamborough. The first, a stately chalk tower, was built in 1669 and, it is believed, was never lit. It is now a Grade II listed building, the oldest complete lighthouse structure in the UK and one of the oldest in the world. The newer lighthouse, built in 1806, acts as a waypoint for deep sea vessels and coastal traffic. As well as its distinctive white cliffs, there are coves, sea caves and stacks along this coastline. Flamborough is close to RSPB Bempton, which boasts the largest and most accessible mainland nesting colony of the gannet, plus puffins, razorbills, guillemots and other seabirds.
