Alton, an ancient village mentioned in the Domesday Book, is in the county of Staffordshire, surrounded by beautiful moorland and the steep-sided River Churnet Valley, with its craggy sandstone outcrops. The village is noted for the theme park resort Alton Towers, which is one of the most popular theme parks in Europe. The village contains numerous buildings of architectural interest; the Round-House, Alton Castle, St Peter's Church, The Malt House and St John’s Church. The Chained Oak is a mysterious oak tree, inspiration for the Alton Towers ride Hex; said to be 1,000 years old and the subject of local legend involving the Earl of Shrewsbury. Alton is considered amongst the most haunted villages in Staffordshire. There are many quiet walks, lakes, woodlands, rocky outcrops and tumbling streams to explore. Alton and its surrounding area has excellent eateries, ranging from gourmet dining to good solid pub-grub.
