Whitney-on-Wye is a small village in Herefordshire, only 3 miles from the market town of Hay-on-Wye and near to the England / Wales border and edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The area provides a paradise for lovers of the outdoors, with an abundance of activities to be enjoyed. Whitney Bridge was built in the late 1770s and is one of only eight privately-owned toll bridges left in the UK. As a riverside site, Whitney Bridge is a prime spot for canoeing and fishing. Hire canoes from the site to paddle to Brewardine, which is easily recognised by the archways of an old red brick bridge and the gardens of Brobury House, or fish for salmon in the Wye. The site has fishing rights for both sides of the river, where you might also spot an otter or kingfisher! There is a friendly pub in Whitney-on-Wye where you can order food and sip on a relaxing pint of local ale. Visitors will also find the peaceful little church of St Peter and St Paul, built in 1740, as well as a local post office.
