Ruthin is a bustling market town in the beautiful Vale of Clwyd. This historic destination is a must for visitors to North Wales, with a fascinating mix of old and new. The older parts of the town, where visitors will find Ruthin Castle and St Peter’s Square, are located on top of a red sandstone hill overlooking the Vale. The town has many old buildings, such as the half-timbered Old Court House built in 1401, and Nantclwyd House, the oldest known town house in Wales, with timbers dating back to 1435. Old County Gaol was built in 1775 and is one of the most popular places to visit as a heritage attraction. Find out about the town’s history through the Ruthin Art Trail, which begins at Ruthin Craft Centre which displays contemporary art and crafts from Wales and around the world, also with a café and tourist information gateway. Ruthin also plays host to a selection of independent shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants, many of which offer wonderful local produce, which is characteristic of the area. Each year the town’s calendar includes the week-long Ruthin Festival and Ruthin Flower Show which both draw many people to the town. Ruthin is also an ideal base from which to explore North Wales, with the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Snowdonia, North Wales coast, Chester, Manchester and Liverpool all within easy reach of the town.
