Flint is a busy town on the estuary of the River Dee in North Wales, 5 miles north of Mold and with great transport links across the north of Wales and to England, and with plenty of amenities for travellers. Views to the south of the town include the spectacular Halkyn Mountain ridge. Brian Fell's iconic sculpture, Footplate, can be seen the local railway station. Savour the wide views out to sea and explore the coast using the newly developed Wales Coast Path, either parking at one of the car parks beside the castle, walking from the town along Swinchiard Brook, or from the train station. Flintshires Coast stretches for 25 miles from Chester to Gronant. The Dee Estuary is a very special place where industry old and new sits alongside historic gems such as Flint Castle, surrounded by internationally important wildlife. The path is well waymarked and there are plenty of places to stop along the way for a well-earned rest. Many of the viewpoints have panels or artworks, telling the story of the coast and the people who have shaped it. When Edward I made his first incursion into the north Wales kingdom of Gwynedd in 1277 he began a programme of castle building to strengthen his claim to rule. One of the first Edwardian castles was at Flint, the Gateway to Wales. The now ruined remains of Flint Castle stand on rocks overlooking the coastal marshes.
