The Gower Peninsula in South Wales is the most westerly part of the historic county of Glamorgan and was the first place in Britain to be named an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Gower is famous for its magnificent coastline and scenery. Its most iconic sight is Worm’s Head, a rocky promontory jutting out into Rhossili Bay. The highest point is The Beacon at Rhossili Down where paragliders are often seen. There are six castles on the peninsula and numerous cairns and standing stones. The southern coast consists of a series of rocky and sandy bays, such as Langland and Three Cliffs, and larger beaches such as Port Eynon, Rhossili and Oxwich Bay. The north is home to the cockle beds of Penclawdd. Outdoors enthusiasts can ride horses on beaches or moorland bridleways, rock climb on sea cliffs, surf on the waves, mountain bike along Rhossili Down and Cefn Bryn Common, cycle on quiet lanes and walk the Wales Coast Path and Gower Way. After a busy day, there are lots of friendly inns serving local ales, such as Gower Gold, and eateries that specialise in fresh local produce, such as cockles and laverbread.
