Llantwit Major is a fascinating historical town located in south-east Wales, along the Vale of Glamorgan coast, only 15 miles from Cardiff. It was the most important early Christian settlement in Wales, founded by St Illtud. The 13th century St Illtud's church, built near an ancient monastery, is a Grade I listed building and one of the oldest parish churches in Wales, containing a fine collection of Celtic carved stones. The town has retained its characterful medieval cobbled streets and buildings from the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as a Roman villa and medieval grange. There are also many independent shops, historical inns and places to eat, where delicious local produce is a feature on the menu. Follow the Blue Plaque trail to discover more of the town. To the south is Colhugh Beach, a popular surfing venue. Here, visitors will find remnants of an Iron Age fort and some of the finest examples of Jurassic fossils in Wales. The pebbled beach and its clifftops are protected by the Glamorgan Heritage Coast and there is easy access to the Wales Coast Path for walkers.
