Cowbridge is a market town in the Vale of Glamorgan in Wales, some 7 miles west of Cardiff. Called Y Bont-faen in Welsh, this historic market town was originally a Roman settlement, and is one of very few medieval walled towns in Wales. Its South Gate and portions of the walls are still standing. The town boasts great shops and independent boutiques. Some are spread along the High Street, others are in the arcades at Mason’s Yard and Verity’s Court. Cowbridge also has a superb range of bistros, restaurants, pubs and wine bars. Walk down Church Street and behind a high stone wall lies Cowbridge Physic Garden. The garden was originally part of the Old Hall Gardens. It is a glorious array of medicinal plants and herbs, typical of physic gardens from centuries past. St Quentin’s Castle comprises mainly early 14th-century remains of a large courtyard castle, including a twin-towered gatehouse. A couple of miles away is Old Beaupre Castle, a ruined medieval fortified manor house.
