Stonehouse is a welcoming town on the edge of the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire, 3 miles west of Stroud and where the valley of the River Frome opens into the Seven Vale. Stonehouse was first mentioned in the Domesday Book which recorded a stone built manor house on the site of Stonehouse Court, an Elizabethan house of 1601, around which the early settlement was mainly established. The cloth industry, which employed most of the inhabitants, was the main influence on the life and character of the town. Stonehouse is served by the River Frome and the Thames, as well as the Severn Canal with its iron swing bridge. The former Stonehouse and Nailsworth Railway line is now a nature reserve and part of National Cycle Route 45, where cyclists can ride to Salisbury or all the way to Chester. There are many shops, restaurants, inns and coffee shops in the town showcasing local produce, including the Woolpack Inn which is housed in a 16th century former cottage and the oldest surviving pub.
