Painswick is an historic hilltop wool town known as ‘Queen of the Cotswolds’, built from characteristic honey-coloured stone quarried from nearby Painswick Beacon. Situated 4 miles north of Stroud and only 5 miles from junction 12 of the M5, it is an ideal base for a stopover, short break or holiday. There are many attractions including the 18th century Rococo Garden with its maze, café and snowdrop displays during early spring, the 99 Yew trees in the churchyard of St Mary’s Church and kids will love Tibbiwell Alpacas. There are also galleries, an 18-hole golf course, independent shops selling local food and fine fabrics, as well as cafes, restaurants and inns serving local ales. Painswick is popular with walkers as it is located at the start of the southern section of the Cotswold Way. Painswick Beacon, a mile-and-a-half outside the town, offers a steep climb with the reward of stunning views across 5 valleys and the Welsh mountains. The Cotswolds and Severn Vale 7-day cycle tour also routes through Painswick for bikers.
