Berkeley is a small town in Gloucestershire, on the edge of the Cotswolds. This charming town sits at the head of the Berkeley Vale, midway between Gloucester and Bristol, on the Little Avon River. There are good road links, and a proximity to Bristol Airport, so the town is easily accessible. Berkeley is rich in history, and well known for its people, events and science. The town is an interesting mix of the historical and contemporary, with old buildings and modern shops. Berkeley Castle, built in 1117, is its most famous landmark. The castle has been in the hands of the Berkeley family for over 900 years and has seen many historic events, including the murder of King Edward II in 1327. It houses many fine collections of ceramics, paintings and silverware as well as national treasures. The castle, gardens and butterfly house attract many visitors and there is a full schedule of events throughout the year.
