Gillingham is a town in the Blackmore Vale area of Dorset. It is the most northerly town in the county with excellent transport links; 4 miles south of the A303, the main road from London to the south-west of England and having a railway station on the Exeter to London railway line. It has a small historic area in the town centre which dates from early medieval times. The town expanded with the arrival of the railway in the 19th century. Gillingham is important as a service and shopping centre for its surrounding villages with over 70 shops and plenty of amenities. It plays host to the annual Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show, which is an agricultural show held every August. Gillingham Town Carnival is held every October. In the 1820s, the artist John Constable stayed at Gillingham vicarage and, being impressed by the beauty of the countryside, undertook several local sketches and paintings. His painting of the old town bridge is in the Tate Gallery.
