Yelverton is a scenic village on the south-western edge of Dartmoor National Park, between Tavistock and Plymouth. This village is a popular base for walkers and cyclists exploring Dartmoor and the Tamar Valley AONB. There are plenty of local shops, places to eat and friendly pubs. Yelverton Paperweight Centre has an extensive collection of glass paperweights and a collection of paintings by local artists. Roborough Rock, also known as ‘The Rock’, is a well-known large igneous rock outcrop immediately south-west of Yelverton. It is located at the southern end of the former RAF Harrowbeer airfield on Roborough Down. There have been settlements in this area since prehistoric times and many standing stones, stone circles, burial chambers and hut circles still survive around the village. Two miles outside Yelverton is Buckland Abbey, the former home of Sir Francis Drake. Also nearby is The Garden House in Buckland Monachorum, a 10-acre garden with a medieval tower and thatched barn.
