Buckfastleigh is a small market town in Devon, situated beside the Devon Expressway at the edge of the Dartmoor National Park. On the old route between Exeter and Plymouth, Buckfastleigh was a centre for the wool trade for most of its history. It is now a centre of tourism and home to Buckfast Abbey, founded in the 11th century by King Canute. The Abbey has a fascinating history and is an active Benedictine Monastery; the only monastery in the UK open to the public. Other attractions include the South Devon Railway, the Buckfastleigh Butterfly Farm and Otter Sanctuary, the Tomb of Squire Richard Cabell and The Valiant Soldier pub. Award-winning Pennywell Farm Centre is about a mile east of the A38 at Buckfastleigh and well worth a visit. Buckfastleigh has local shopping, and there's also a Farmers' Market every Thursday in the Town Hall. With 13 letters, Buckfastleigh is the longest place name in England with no repeated letters!
