Appledore is a charming village at the mouth of the River Torridge in Devon. A thriving fishing and trading village since the 14th century, Appledore has been a famous boat-building centre for many years and the shipyard is still active today. In Elizabethan times, Appledore, along with Bideford, was a large importer of tobacco, and tales of smugglers can be found around every corner! This quaint fishing village has a maze of narrow streets leading to the quay, which is very central to life in the village. Here you will find activities including fishing trips and crabbing opportunities. Appledore boasts a small range of shops, pubs and art galleries. Hocking’s Ice Cream is a local delicacy! The village is a great base from which to explore North Devon, and is close to great surfing beaches plus the ancient market towns of Bideford, Barnstaple and Great Torrington.
