Hotels, Guest accommodation, Self Catering & Camping in Wantage
Wantage is a small market town in the Vale of White Horse, with a good range of shops and services, including plenty of great places to eat and drink. The towns buildings are mostly 17th and 18th century, with narrow cobbled streets and passages to explore. A market is held every Saturday and Wednesday. In the town is the Vale and Downland Museum in Church Street, the 13th century Parish Church and the Market Square with its statue of King Alfred the Great, born in Wantage in 849 AD. Wantage has a month-long festival of music and arts in June and July. Sir John Betjeman, Poet Laureate, lived in the town for many years and wrote poems including "Wantage Bells" and "On Leaving Wantage". The Betjeman Millenium Park, with a statue of the poet and several displays of his works, occupies a pretty wooded area in the town.
