Abingdon–on–Thames is a historic market town nestled on the River Thames, just 6 miles south of Oxford. The town has a wealth of architecture, historical treasures, shops and beautiful riverside parks and gardens, plus a choice of leisure facilities including tennis, swimming, boating, fishing, waterside pubs and a Monday market. Historical attractions include the site of the old Abingdon Abbey, the Abbey Gateway, St Nicolas’ Church, Trendell’s Folly, the Lost Abbey Trail, St Helen’s Church and Long Alley Almhouse. Abingdon-On-Thames has an excellent museum housed in an elegant building. The town has a fantastic tradition of bun throwing; where local dignitaries throw buns from the roof of the museum for huge crowds of people to catch on celebration days, such as royal marriages, coronations and jubilees. Abingdon also has a very old and still active Morris Dancing tradition.
