The southern gateway to the Oxfordshire Cotwolds, Burford is a beautiful old town; its High Street sloping from the high Wolds, where there are stunning views over the open countryside, down to the River Windrush in the valley. A 3-arched medieval bridge crosses the river at the foot of the hill. Burford is situated 20 miles west of Oxford, and is understandably popular with visitors. The main street slopes gently down to the river and is lined with dignified old houses and ancient cottages and shops, many of which appear little changed since Tudor times. There are wonderful little side streets to explore with old pubs, restaurants, tea and antique shops aplenty. The 15th century parish church of St. John the Baptist is magnificent and well worth a visit. The Cotswold Wildlife Park, 2 miles south of Burford, exhibits over 260 different species of animals in 160 acres of landscaped parkland and gardens.
