Sandown sits on the southern coast of the Isle of Wight, sheltered in a beautiful bay. It is famed for its golden sands, seafront and pier with traditional amusements, bowling, crazy golf and cafes. Sandown offers an assortment of shops, pubs and restaurants and has lots of attractions, including the Isle of Wight Zoo and Dinosaur Museum. The main town beach stretches to Yaverland Beach, which is very popular for watersports. The area around Sandown Bay is a fun place for fossil hunting. Sandown is surrounded by a wealth of natural features. To the north is Culver Down, owned and managed by the National Trust. Sandown Levels are freshwater wetlands where Alverstone Mead Nature Reserve is a very popular spot for birdwatching. Further inland, Borthwood provides delightful woodland walks. At extreme low tide, a petrified forest is partially revealed in the northern part of Sandown Bay.
