Battle is a small market town in East Sussex with huge historical significance. It takes its name from the famous battle between would-be rulers of England, William Duke of Normandy and the Saxon King Harold. On 14th October 1066, this area witnessed the Battle of Hastings, an event so significant it completely changed the course of English history. Following the battle, William the Conqueror built Battle Abbey and the high altar is believed to have been placed on the spot where Harold fell. Today, the abbey and battlefield are cared for by English Heritage and the Visitor Centre is well worth seeing. The imposing abbey gatehouse, built in c. 1338 can be seen as you look down the length of the High Street. The town offers a diverse mix of attractions, including a museum, galleries, shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. Battle is a popular tourist destination and lies in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
