St. Leonards-on-Sea has been part of Hastings since the late 19th century, although it retains a separate identity. The town is largely made up of attractive terraces and squares of Regency housing. The beach is a long strip of sandy shingle that stretches for miles, and when the tide is out, you will find glorious sand, rockpools and mussel-strewn cragginess. Amble along the promenade, arranged as a double-decker, with one walkway at beach level and the other above it at street level. For green spaces, go to St. Leonards Gardens or Alexandra Park. St. Leonards is known for its laid-back cafes and vintage shops and has a growing number of delicatessens, bars, pubs and restaurants. It has been a popular spot for 20th-century furniture shops and galleries for some years. Direct train services from St. Leonards and Hastings reach Charing Cross in London in about an hour and a half
