Melrose is a small town on the River Tweed, with a spectacular abbey and picturesque setting at the foot of the Eildon Hills. With plenty of great shops, eateries and attractions, it is a definite must for visitors to the Borders region. Melrose Abbey is one of the most beautiful monastic ruins in the UK. It is the site of the burial of the heart of Scottish King Robert the Bruce. The remains of the Abbey are cared for by Historic Scotland. Forming part of this, is the excellent Commendators House Museum, which lays claim to having the largest collection of medieval artefacts on display anywhere in Scotland. Close to the abbey is the walled Priorwood Garden, run by the National Trust for Scotland. Melrose Golf Club is a 9-hole golf course situated on the edge of the town at the foot of the Eildon Hills.
Every year in June, the week-long Melrose Festival takes place. Melrose is now host to the annual Borders Book Festival which also takes place during June. Melrose hosts the annual Eildon Two Hills Race, attracting many runners, and the Melrose Pipe Band Championships, attracting pipers from all over the world. Also in Melrose is the Trimontium Museum, celebrating the Roman heritage of the area and the starting point for a 4-mile circular walk taking in the key Roman sites. Two miles to the west is Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott. The Southern Upland Way long-distance footpath also passes through Melrose.
