The historic fishing port and resort of Eyemouth lies 5 miles north of the border where the mouth of the River Eye provides a natural harbour. Its attractions include a sandy north-facing beach, piers, interesting shops, a working harbour where you can hire boats and plenty of other attractions. A visitor centre in the town explains the methods of fishing, the types of nets and the vessels used. You can also see the market in action in the early mornings from a viewing platform. Boats are available for hire for sea fishing, sightseeing and diving. Notable buildings in the town include Gunsgreen House and the attractive Town Hall. The life of the historical hero of the town, William Spears (1812–1885), is celebrated by the dramatic bronze statue in Eyemouth Market Place. The 18-hole golf course in the town has sea views and a restaurant which is open to the public.
Eyemouth also has a great leisure centre consisting of a gym, studio, sauna and swimming pools. The Berwickshire coastline consists of high cliffs over deep clear water with sandy coves and picturesque harbours. The coast offers opportunities for sailing, birdwatching, walking, fishing and diving. The geology of the area shows evidence of folding that led the scientist James Hutton, Father of Modern Geology, to announce his theory of uniformitarianism.
