Duns is an old market town in the Scottish borders, filled with narrow streets that lead off from a spacious market square with a traditional Scottish Mercat cross sited in the centre. Duns is formally the county town of Berwickshire and the Town Trail provides an insight into local history and a flavour of the development of the town. Duns Law, a 700 feet hill beside the town, is the original site of the settlement of Duns. Along its top are the remains of an old Iron Age hill fort. A stone at the summit also identifies the beginning of the fight for Scottish independence, first against Charles I and later against Cromwell.
Duns Castle lies within a beautiful 1200-acre estate. Steeped in history, the estate also boasts its own nature reserve, with extensive forest trails and bespoke outdoor activities. Inside the castle, guests can enjoy a host of pre-booked experiences such as whisky tastings and art classes. Manderston, just outside of Duns, is an Edwardian country house with opulent staterooms, the only silver-staircase in the world and extensive domestic quarters. It stands in 56 acres of formal gardens, with magnificent stables and stunning marble dairy. The House and Gardens are open to the public. With a history stretching back 122 years, Duns Golf Club offers an outstanding golf course, open to all ages and golfing abilities. The Jim Clark Museum, a centre devoted to the late world Formula 1 champion racing driver is also well worth a visit.
