Newcastleton, or Copshaw Holm, is a village in the Scottish Borders, a few miles from the border of Scotland and England. The village is in Liddlesdale and is on the Liddel Water. It is the site of Hermitage Castle, a semi-ruined castle under the care of Historic Scotland. The castle has a reputation, both from its history and its appearance, as one of the most sinister and atmospheric in Scotland. Newcastleton has hotels, shops, pubs, cafes, a primary school, GP surgery and a church. The former Townfoot Church now houses the Liddesdale Heritage Centre, a museum devoted to the culture and history of the area. Newcastleton Forest is near the village, and is home to one of the 7Stanes mountain bike centres. Whether you want a peaceful picnic with lovely views, a wilderness ramble or an adrenalin-rush mountain bike ride, this offers the perfect setting. The forest is also a wildlife haven and look out for ancient settlements and burial cairns as you go.
Newcastleton is the location of Whithaugh Park, an outdoor activity and residential centre run by Rock UK offering groups of young people the opportunity to try out a variety of different outdoor activities. The village also possesses the amenity of an astroturf multi-sport pitch, as well as a gym and football pitch. Situated on the Holm Hill is a 9-hole golf course. Newcastleton hosts a traditional music festival every year, as well as the Holm Show, a small traditional agricultural event.
