Lauder is a lively and friendly market town 22 miles south east of Edinburgh on the western edge of Lammermuir Hills, and on Leader Water. The town has excellent transport links, situated on the main A68 road south from Edinburgh to the English Border. The area is popular with walkers as the Southern Upland Way long distance routes passes by the town, but Lauder can offer something of interest to everyone, from its leisure centre, to historic houses, mediaeval ruins, golf, fishing, inns, great shops and accommodation. One of the best ways to learn about local history is to explore the Lauder Town Trail, taking about one hour. The Town Hall dominates the southern end of the Market Place.
Near the Town Hall and just to the east of the Market Place is Lauder Old Church, designed to a very unusual Greek Cross plan with an octagonal tower. Nearby is Thirlestane Castle, one of the Seven Great Houses in Scotland. This magnificent building is still the Maitland family home and contains unrivalled 17th century plasterwork ceilings, fine furnishings, paintings and a collection of Edwardian and Victorian toys. Thirlestane Castle is open to the public. One of the most popular summer festivals is the Lauder Common Riding held on the first Saturday in August. Soutra Isle, north of the town is the remains of the House of the Holy Trinity, one of the most important institutions in medieval Scotland.
