One of Scotland's seven cities and once the country's capital, Perth is found in central Scotland on the banks of the River Tay, one of the five big Scottish salmon fishing rivers. It has been known as The Fair City since the publication of the novel Fair Maid of Perth by Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott in 1828. A beautiful city, best seen from the viewpoint in Kinnoull Hill Woodland Park, visitors will find much to see and do. Perth is the perfect destination for those looking to find unique gifts, vintage stores, independent retailers and a range of excellent places to eat and drink. Attractions include the Black Watch Castle and Museum adjacent to North Inch Park, Branklyn Gardens which is a 2-acre hillside treasure, Perth Museum and Art Gallery, The Fergusson Gallery and Perth Concert Hall which holds live music, comedy and dance events all year round. There are also a selection of excellent golf courses. Also in close proximity is Scone Abbey, which formerly housed the Stone of Scone on which the King of Scots were traditionally crowned. Perth Racecourse is also found near here. A few miles north of Perth is a quirky but interesting attraction, The Meikleour Beech Hedge, planted in 1745, which is recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the highest hedge in the world!
