Kinross is a bustling town of narrow streets and old buildings, with plenty of attractions and amenities. It is conveniently located just off the M90 motorway. The name Kinross means The Head of the Point and relates to the original location of its church overlooking Loch Leven, the largest loch of the Scottish Lowlands and an RSPB nature reserve. On an islet within the loch is Lochleven Castle, a 14th century tower and prison to Mary Queen of Scots in 1567. Between April and September, you can take the small ferry to the castle and there are also boat trips around the loch. Enjoy the Heritage Trail on the north and east shores, fish for brown trout on the loch or have a picnic in Kirkgate Park. The town has two 18-hole golf courses; The Bruce and The Montgomery, and Kinross Curling Rink is a 4-sheet ice rink for curling, with introductory courses for beginners, along with coaching sessions for the more experienced. Portmoak, a few miles away, is home to the Scottish Gliding Centre, the largest gliding club in Scotland, providing year-round flying to visitors.
