Beautifully situated on the banks of the River Tay, Dunkeld is often described as the ‘Gateway to the Highlands’ due to its position on the main road and rail lines north. It has a railway station on the Highland Main Line and is linked to Birnam on the far side of the Tay by a Thomas Telford seven-arched bridge. Dunkeld is a picturesque town with a rich history. A fierce battle in 1689 between the Jacobites and government soldiers led to the destruction of much of the town, including parts of the cathedral. Dunkeld Cathedral is mainly in ruins, although one part of the building is intact and still in use as a church. Around 20 of the houses within Dunkeld have been restored by the National Trust for Scotland, who also run a shop within the town. Dunkeld also has a selection of cafés and specialist independent shops. Dunkeld and Birnam Golf Club provides one of the most picturesque golf courses in Highland Perthshire in a heathland setting on a hillside above the town. The Hermitage is a protected site where huge fir trees line the path to Black Linn Waterfall, with the 18th-century folly known as Ossian’s Hall overlooking the crashing water.
