Blairgowrie, known locally as ‘Blair’, is a market town on the banks of the River Ericht, twinned with Rattray, which is just across the river. Known historically for the flax industry, Blairgowrie is now famous as the home of soft fruit and raspberry-growing in Scotland. To take home a plant to grow your own fruit, then visit the family-run Moyness Nurseries in the town. Blairgowrie is also a great place to visit for salmon or trout fishing on the river, to play a round of golf at one of the local courses or to explore the town’s independent shops, market stalls, eateries and pubs. Blairgowrie also provides a gateway to Glenshee on the tip of the Cairngorms, a popular year-round destination for sports including skiing, mountain biking, abseiling, hang gliding and paragliding. The town also marks the start and end of the Cateran Trail 60-mile circular walking route. The Meikleour Beech Hedge south of Blairgowrie is the longest hedge in Britain and the highest of its kind in the world. Blairgowrie Highland Games are held annually in September and is noted for its mass tug o'war where as many contestants as possible from Blairgowrie and Rattray compete against each other!
