Alyth is a small town in rural Perthshire overlooking the countryside of Strathmore, at the foot of the Braes of Angus, which form the south-eastern edge of the Grampian Mountains. Alyth developed in association with cattle droving and the wool, jute and linen trades. Attractions include its pack bridge from the 1500s and the market cross dating from 1670. From the south side of the Market Cross, a gateway leads to the ‘Auld Kirk Yaird’ where there are imposing old stone arches which formed part of the old parish church and which stand on the site of the 6th Century church of St. Moluag. Alyth expanded with the arrival of the railway in 1861. This is an area rich in farming, which is an inspiration and resource for the collections in Alyth Museum. The town has many shops and businesses as well as a community of artists. There is an 18-hole golf course and Alyth Den provides a great area for walking, through forests and past the river. Near the town is Bamff House, incorporating a 16th-century tower house, and to the north-east on Barry Hill stands an Iron Age fort.
