Banavie is a small village about 5 miles from Fort William. The village is one of the closest to Ben Nevis, and the scenery of this area is simply magical. Located in the Grampian Mountains in the Lochaber region, active climbers, adventurers and hill walkers can face the challenge of climbing up Ben Nevis to reach the summit. The Caledonian Canal passes through the village at Neptunes Staircase, which is a set of lock gates that raise vessels into Banavie upper canal area, which has a long pontoon for visiting boats and yachts. Banavie has a train station which is part of the West Highland Line between Fort William and Mallaig. There is a spacious free car park at Banavie and a play area for children. A short walk from the car park leads to the Canal lock gates, where you can spend time watching vessels navigate the canal. It is a lovely walk or cycle from Banavie into Fort William via Caol Village. The Great Glen Way long distance path passes through the village, mostly following the canal tow-path.
