Surrounded by some of the most dramatic and beautiful scenery in Scotland, Ballachulish is a perfect base for exploring the amazing landscape of Glencoe. This village used to be the slate capital of Scotland and the disused quarries can be still seen nearby. Today the village is a beautiful holiday destination with a range of activities available including mountain biking, kayaking, fishing, golf and skiing as well as miles of mountain and forest tracks. The village is split into three – North Ballachulish, South Ballachulish and Ballachulish Village around Loch Leven at its narrowest point where a passenger ferry used to carry those wishing passage to the north across the loch. While the ferry has long gone, the slipways that served the ferry remain. South Ballachulish largely comprises the slipway and the nearby Ballachulish Hotel. Close to the steps leading down from the bridge to the Oban road is a memorial to James Stewart. North Ballachulish is home to an art gallery, hotel and the slipway for the old ferry. The largest settlement of Ballachulish lies on the south side of Loch Leven, a mile or so west of the village of Glencoe. Ballachulish is home to some striking buildings, a bank, a shop and a pub. Ballachulish Visitor Centre is just across the road from the old slate quarries, which now provide scenic walks.
