Kinlochleven lies at the eastern end of Loch Leven, surrounded by imposing mountains. To the north lie the Mamores, while to the south are the mountains guarding the north side of Glencoe. The village was developed in the early 1900s when the then North British Aluminium Company created the Blackwater Reservoir, a hydro-electric plant and aluminium smelter. With the smelter now gone, the village continues to be proud of its strong industrial heritage and has transformed itself into a top destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The Atlas Brewery has now moved into part of the old aluminium works producing excellent local beers, and next door to it, The Ice Factor attraction includes the biggest indoor ice climbing facility in the world. Visitors can take advantage of superb accommodation, eating and shopping facilities within the village. The woodlands above Kinlochleven were chosen as a suitable site for a POW camp during World War 1. The remains of the site are still visible today, visited by many using a popular access path. The West Highland Way also passes through the village.
