Wigtown is a town within the Dumfries and Galloway region. It lies east of Stranraer and south of Newton Stewart. It is well-known today as Scotlands National Book Town, with a high concentration of second-hand book shops and it hosts the annual Wigtown Book Festival. Wigtown is the gateway to and main centre of the Machars peninsula. Due to the gulf stream, the climate is mild, and plants normally associated with the warmer climates of lower latitudes can successfully be grown here. Wigtown lies less than 1 mile from Bladnoch, a village with a distillery producing malt whisky of the same name. The River Bladnoch can be fished for salmon and has historically been well known as one of Scotlands finest rivers producing spring fish. It meets the River Cree in Wigtown Bay, meandering through a large area of salt marsh which has been designated as a local nature reserve. Wigtown Bay Local Nature Reserve is the largest local reserve in the UK. It has internationally recognised significant numbers of pink-footed geese, greylag geese, many species of duck and wading birds visiting in autumn and winter. The Wigtown and Bladnoch Golf Club has a nine-hole golf course on the outskirts of Wigtown.
