Langholm, known locally as Muckle Toon, is situated 19 miles north of Carlisle on the main A7 between Carlisle and Edinburgh. This appealing town is well-known for its woollen mills and as the birthplace of the legendary poet Hugh McDiarmid, perhaps Scotlands greatest modern poet. Today the main road running west from Langholm Bridge is named in memory of Thomas Telford, who was also born nearby. It is also the ancestral home of astronaut Neil Armstrong. This is a bustling town with many places to eat and several independent shops. The Buccleuch Centre is a venue which brings performers from across the globe to the town, and hosts farmers markets and antique fairs.

Langholm is surrounded by four hills which provide excellent walking opportunities. The highest is 300 metre Whita hill, on which stands an obelisk, known as The Monument. One of Scotlands great salmon rivers, the River Esk, flows through Langholm. A highlight of the year is the Langholm Common Riding, a summer spectacle that involves horse-riding, athletics, dancing, a giant thistle and much pageantry. The Muckle Toon Adventure Festival in June is fast becoming the flagship outdoor adventure event of southern Scotland.
