Thornhill is a bustling and attractive village in the beautiful Nith Valley in Dumfriesshire. The cruxiform pattern of streets provide excellent views through the village and bring an unusual feeling of spaciousness. The centre of the village is formed by a Cross of local sandstone, topped by a lead figure of the winged horse Pegasus. The Pegasus figure is made of lead, mined in the nearby Lead Hills. The village has many retail outlets, quaint little shops, boutiques, cafes, pubs and eateries. Around Thornhill, there are numerous opportunities for visitors to participate in outdoor activities, such as walking, cycling and fishing. It is renowned for the excellent fishing in the nearby River Nith tributaries. There is also an excellent 18-hole golf course and a bowling green.
Just 4 miles from Thornhill is Drumlanrig Castle, which has something to offer everyone, whether you want a quiet afternoon out having a tour of the castle and drinking tea in the cafe, or to indulge in some outdoor pursuits. With mountain biking, walking and cycle paths along with fishing, an adventure playground and Victorian gardens, it is a guaranteed fun day out.
