Lochmaben is a small village, 4 miles west of Lockerbie in Dumfries and Galloway. Lochmaben Castle was the home of Robert the Bruce when he was Lord of Annandale and a statue of Bruce stands before the town hall. Lochmaben was also the birthplace of William Paterson, the co-founder of the Bank of England.
Today, the village has a doctors surgery, bank, post office and several independent shops and places to eat. It has an 18-hole golf course surrounding Kirk Loch on the edge of the town. Lochmaben has 3 main lochs: Kirk Loch, Castle Loch and the Mill Loch. It also has 2 smaller lochs: Blind Loch and the Upper Loch. The lochs thrive with both sailing and fishing taking place throughout the year. In some years in winters, frost curling has taken place on the frozen lochs. Annandale Way, a 53-mile long-distance walking route (from the source of the River Annan to the sea) passes through Lochmaben and along the bank of Castle Loch. It offers interesting walking from Lochmaben on a day walk basis. The town isn't far from the popular 7stanes mountain biking centres at Ae Forest and Mabie Forest.
