Sanquhar is a market town in Dumfries and Galloway, surrounded by beautiful scenery, and close to main transport links between Dumfries and Ayr. Tollbooth Museum, a handsome Georgian town house in which the history of the village is revealed is a must-see. Find out what life was like in the towns jail and learn about the miners of Sanquhar, as well as the local weaving and hand-knitting industries. Follow the Town Heritage Trail and look out for the plaques highlighting points of interest. Sanquhar is notable for its tiny post office (established in 1712), claimed to be the oldest working post office in the world. The high street houses several shops and there are places to eat and drink too. Near Sanquhar, the Crawick Multiverse is a land art project. Opened in 2015, this stunning new work of land art has transformed a former coal mine into an incredible outdoor space to be enjoyed by visitors of all ages and interests. Every August, the Royal Burgh of Sanquhar holds its annual Riding of the Marches. This week-long event celebrates the Royal Burgh, and a parade of horses, floats with free entertainment. The remains of Sanquhar Castle lie on the southern edge of the town. You can see the castle from the main road, and the ruins are also passed by the Southern Upland Way long distance path en-route into the town.
