Whitehaven is a small Georgian town and port, situated on the west coast of Cumbria, and is built on the industries of shipping and mining, both of which have now declined, but Whitehaven is never-the-less an attractive town and is one of the 40 Gem Towns in England. It lies equidistant between Cumbria's two largest settlements, Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness, and is served by the Cumbrian Coast Line and the A595 road. You can learn more about the history of mining at Whitehaven at the Haig Colliery Mining Museum. There is a sculpture near the Beacon, a memorial to the town’s mining history by Colin Telfer, and features a pillar of coal with four figures.
