Ulverston is a market town in southern Cumbria. It is close to the Lake District National Park boundary, and just north of Morecambe Bay. This charming town has many old buildings and cobbled streets, and is the start of the 70-mile Cumbrian Way. It was also the birthplace of Stan Laurel, and is home to the world’s only Laurel and Hardy Museum. The Hoad Monument on Hoad Hill is open to the public during the summer where you can experience breath-taking views of Morecambe Bay, the Lake District fells, and nearby Druid’s Circle on Birkrigg Common. Ulverston’s attractions also include the Lakes Glass Centre, where you can watch the transformation of molten glass into spectacular works of art and crystal. It is also home to the Gateway to Furness Exhibition. Coronation Hall is a magnificent theatre which also houses the tourist information centre. The oldest building in Ulverston is St Mary’s Church. Nearby is Conishead Priory, a splendid Victorian gothic mansion, now a Buddhist centre, which provides historical tours at the weekends.
