The village is about 7 miles east of Cockermouth, and is approximately 1 mile from Bassenthwaite Lake. Containing just a single pub and no shops, it is largely an agricultural community, with a number of holiday homes. Bassenthwaite Lake is one of the largest in the Lake District, long and narrow but also extremely shallow, a finger of water lying under the lofty bulk of Skiddaw, enjoy spectacular sights of ospreys swooping over the lake and diving for fish. This national nature reserve is rich in wildlife and is often full of sailing boats. There is a shore path which runs the length of the west shore, at Mirehouse there is a small open-air theatre
