Haydon Bridge is an excellent base for exploring Northumberland, with Hadrian’s Wall, Northumberland National Park and the beautiful North Pennines on the doorstep. Birthplace of renowned Victorian artist John Martin, its countryside helped inspire his spectacular paintings, and later, the poems of Philip Larkin, who spent many holidays here. Visitors can stand on the bridge to watch salmon jumping or do the same while enjoying a meal and a drink in our riverside inns. A good selection of accommodation gives the visitor easy access to the main attractions of Hadrian’s Wall country. For those who want to explore on foot, a wide range of walks, including the popular John Martin Trail are available, and for the more energetic, the annual Haydon Hundred Cyclo-Sportive attracts cyclists from far and wide for a challenging tour of the area’s spectacular countryside
