Thetford is a market town in the Breckland district of Norfolk, on the A11 road between Norwich and London, just south of Thetford Forest. Once the ancient capital of East Anglia, Thetford is a historical town. After the second world war, it became an overspill town for Londoners, tripling its size. Visit the Ancient House Museum, Castle Hill, Cluniac Priory, the Charles Burrell engineering works' site, King's House, the Little Ouse river, the Town Bridge and old theatre. Much of Dad’s Army was filmed here, and there is a museum to commemorate this famous television programme. Thetford was home to Boudicca, queen of the British Celtic Iceni tribe who led an uprising against the Roman Empire. The town also gave birth to Thomas Paine, the English-born American political activist, who was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Thetford Forest is the UK's largest man made lowland forest with pines, heathland and broadleaves providing a haven for a rich variety of animal and plant life.
