Downham Market is a characterful town dating back to Saxon times, on the edge of The Fens and on the banks of the River Great Ouse. It is full of historic buildings and amazing architecture. Downham has the nickname Gingerbread Town due to its buildings made from local carrstone. The market is held Fridays and Saturdays on the town hall car park. Notable buildings in the town include its Medieval Parish Church and Victorian clock tower. The town is also known as the place where Charles I hid after the Battle of Naseby. The decorative town sign depicts the crown and arrows of St Edmund with horses to show the importance of the horse fairs in the town's history. A heritage centre, Discover Downham, opened in 2016. Downham Market railway station is on the Fen Line from London to Kings Lynn. The town’s signal box is a rare example, granted Grade II listed status.
